Titan Review Sound & Recording December-09

Tuesday, December 1, 2009 |

The last 40 years of synthesizer history were wearily digitalized by the Best Service team into a vast 5.500 multi samples. Not only were old analog bolides such as the Oberheim OBX or Roland Jupiter-8 incorporated, but also classic workstations and even virtual synths. So you can see it has a vast variety. A powerful streaming and surround compatible sample player allows varied editing of the sounds. TITAN is available as plug-in and stand alone instrument for Mac as well as Windows platforms (XP/ VISTA). The well equipped effect section contains good sounding standard fx such as delay, flanger, phaser, 4 filter delay, band parametric EQ, various filters, bit crusher, compressor, limiter etc. and a high quality convolution reverb with 400 impulse-responses called „Origami“.

Unusual for a sample player is the possibility to import your own sounds. This is made easier by the auto mapping function. For more creativity an arpeggiator, that can import MIDI files and a 64-step sequencer were added. Both come with a shuffle function and can be rerouted to external synths. The sound designers at TITAN really did a great job. One realizes that the material was designed by musicians for musicians. The sound quality is very high and in the selection they made sure not to offer bombastic fx monsters but rather practical synth sounds that work well in the mix. Another pleasant feature is that many synths were sampled with the original filter and effect settings in order to preserve the authenticity.

A very admirable fact is the super-short (in average 1 sec) loading times of the partially relatively extensive multi-samples. This makes browsing/ zapping through the sounds truly fun.

ENGINE
During the development of the player with the nice name „Engine“ Best Service cooperated with the company Yellow Tools. Engine is the equivalent to the high end sample player INDEPENDENCE 2.5 from Yellow Tools, with slight modification by Best Service.

Conclusion
A synth library in this style with this content is unprecedented. TITAN offers a mass of excellent classic synth sounds and will probably soon become a type of studio standard. The engine player is extremely powerful and versatile. The price is fair considering the available content.

Titan Review - Music Tech Magazine 12-2009

Tuesday, December 1, 2009 |

Titan brings together more than 5000 sounds from the last 20 years of synthesis history. Mark Cousins weights it up.
Sampling 200 synthesizers and creating more than 5500 accompanying patches is certainly a gargantuan task by anyone`s standards, so it’s no surprise that Best Service’s latest virtual instrument has been given the rather apt title of Titan. As well as offering an impressive amount of patch and sample data (36GB at the last count), Titan is also notable in the fact that it utilizes a sample engine developed in conjunction with Yellow Tools. Not surprisingly, therefore, Best Service’s “ENGINE” shares many similarities with Yellow Tools’ Independence Pro, as well as having a series of dedicated controls and features that relate specifically to the Titan library.

Setting up Titan requires installing Best Service’s ENGINE, followed by the Titan installer for all the various preset files. You then have to manually install Titan’s Image files into the corresponding Image folder in the ENGINE root folder. It’s worth noting that the ENGINE root folder can be installed on any available drive, enabling you to store the 36 GBs of sample data separate from your main system drive. Copy protection is via Yellow Tools’ E-License system, a challenge-and-response solution.

Combustion engine
Given that this is the first ENGINE-based product from Best Service, we were eager to see how the instrument performed. If you’re familiar with independence Pro, ENGINE won’t come as a great surprise. New users, though, will be pleased to note how efficient and easy to use it is, with its clear performance layering system accessible to the left of the interface and a large QuickEdit page providing immediate control over elements such as filtering, envelopes and effects. Delving deeper into the architecture, it’s also possible to use the Pro Edit page to gain more detailed control over each layer. The organization of Titan’s patches follows a functional and ordered approach. Patches are listed by instrument type (synths, basses, pads and so on), with futher sub-categories. Given the range of synths used to source many of these sounds, it might have been good to see some indication of their origins, although those who are acquainted with ‘classic’ synths will recognize many of the sounds.

Sample this
Overall, the quality of the multi-sampling is excellent, with the patches playable over a large range and many of the original details seemingly intact. The additional programming (beyond the basic sounds captured in the samples) seems to be sensitively light – adding small amounts of ENGINE’s filters, for example, rather than smothering the samples with multiple layers and effects. The step sequencer and arpeggiator also add to many of the sounds, providing a suitably contemporary twist on the basic patches.
Hard not to be impressed by the range and number of instrument patches on offer. Although there are plenty of great-sounding basses and analogue pads, some of the piano and keyboard sounds have a distinctly 90s feel to them. Still, given the amount of raw material and the features available in ENGINE for modifying the basic samples, there’s still plenty of creative potential.

Clash of the Titans
Titan is an impressive first outing for Best Service’s ENGINE system and an exciting indicator of things to come. If you’re new to the world of recording and music production, then an instrument like Titan certainly represents a cost-effective way of acquiring a large number of key synth and keyboard sounds, especially given Omnisphere’s fondness for ‘unusual’ sounds and textures rather than conventional pianos, pads, organs and so on. Those of a more creative persuasion, though, may prefer the sonic possibilities of a good contemporary software synth, even if the palette of sounds might be slightly less extensive.

Summary
Why buy?
  • An exhaustive collection of synth sounds
  • Powerful playback engine
  • Clear patch organization
    Walk on by

  • Source instruments aren’t identified
  • Some patches sound dated

    Verdict
Titan represents an impressive collection of sounds for your money, as well as featuring one of the most finely tuned playback engines to date. Some of the sounds are slightly dated, but there’s still plenty to explore.

  • K Size Minimal Edition review - Computer Music

    Friday, September 11, 2009 |

The debut release in the K Size series delivers 2817 loops and single hits, aimed mainly at minimal house producers. It’s one of the best house sample offerings we’ve tasted. There has obviously been some premium kit used in the production, as everything sounds phat, with plenty to spark your creativity. All o f the essential categories are in there, with plenty of focus on bass and percussive sounds. Most of the samples are ready to go, with little or no processing necessary.

Production Tools Vol 1 - Review Computer Music

    Friday, September 11, 2009 |

35 construction kits for use in a variety of house sub-genres, including electro, tech and progressive house. Each kit is broken down into individual instrument and drum loops, then each drum loop is broken down into individual sample hits. Plus, every pattern is backed up with a MIDI file. The sound quality is consistently elite and the style has absolutely been nailed. It strikes us that, as well as a sample source, this product doubles up as an exceptional tool for learning about the details of top-grade house music production.

    EASTWEST announces HOLLYWOOD STRINGS

    Monday, June 29, 2009 |

EASTWEST/QUANTUM LEAP announces the debut of its latest release, HOLLYWOOD STRINGS virtual (software) instrument — a collection of orchestral string instruments with unprecedented control over sound and performance.

Recording for HOLLYWOOD STRINGS took place at the famous EASTWEST STUDIO 1, the same studio where many Hollywood soundtracks and television themes were recorded with a live orchestra. Heading this project were co-producers DOUG ROGERS, NICK PHOENIX and THOMAS BERGERSEN and sound engineer SHAWN MURPHY.

Joining Rogers and Phoenix as co-producer on HOLLYWOOD STRINGS is Thomas Bergersen, a highly respected composer and orchestrator, and Phoenix’s partner in trailer music company “Two Steps From Hell”. His extensive experience in composing for orchestras and with virtual orchestras made him a perfect fit for the multi award-winning team of Rogers and Phoenix.

Shawn Murphy, is an ACADEMY AWARD, C.A.S. (Cinema Audio Society), BAFTA, and EMMY award-winning sound engineer who has recorded and mixed the scores for more than 300 feature films including ET: the Extra-Terrestrial, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Star Wars, Jurassic Park, all five Harry Potter films, Titanic, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Bourne Ultimatum, Minority Report, Saving Private Ryan, Munich, The Passion Of The Christ, X-Men: The Last Stand, Memoirs of a Geisha and Ice Age.

“Murphy was an obvious choice for this project; who better to obtain that quintessential Hollywood sound other than someone with his credits," says Rogers. "HOLLYWOOD STRINGS looks to expand on the success we achieved with EASTWEST/QUANTUM LEAP SYMPHONIC ORCHESTRA by providing a perfect large scoring stage sound and a more intimate scoring stage sound with divisi capability.”

“The sound of these virtual strings are as good as it gets,” says Phoenix. “We have one of the top sound engineers in the business, a famous and beautiful sounding recording studio, the most incredible selection of microphones available, the best analog and digital recording equipment, and top Hollywood string players - how could we go wrong?”

“I've used many virtual orchestras over the last decade, including some I developed with other composers, and some I developed myself. With each new development, I got one step closer to my ideal compositional tool.” says Bergersen. “HOLLYWOOD STRINGS includes features that I consider necessary if you want to create realistic orchestral strings on your DAW.”

HOLLYWOOD STRINGS has many groundbreaking features not found in any other virtual strings collection. Finger position is, for the first time, controllable by the user, so they can play as far up the strings as they want, and get a fuller more romantic Hollywood sound. Vibrato intensity and extensive dynamics are controllable by the user. Extensive multi-dynamic true legato has been sampled for all sections in three different categories: slurred, portamento, and bow change. This results in unsurpassed legato performance that has never been available in the sample world. HOLLYWOOD STRINGS has five user-controllable microphone positions including main pickup (Decca tree), mid pickup, close pickup, surround pickup, and an alternate vintage circa 1945 RCA ribbon room pickup.

Collectively, EASTWEST/QUANTUM LEAP HOLLYWOOD STRINGS offers unprecedented control over sound and performance, and is a must have compositional tool for serious composers.

EW/QL Pianos review gets 4.5 out of 5 stars - Computer Music

    Tuesday, August 26, 2008 |

Sound and expression are all-important with acoustic pianos, and this bundle seriously delivers. From the quietest pianissimo to full-on, pedal-down rumble, the sound is wonderfully accurate, but also different from piano to piano. Quantum Leap Pianos is one of the best on the market, and actually represents great value for money when compared to the competition. 4.5 out of 5 stars - Computer Music

    EQ Magazine reviews FAB FOUR

    Sunday, May 4, 2008 |

As you play the instruments, you`ll recognize many signature sounds-guitars, keyboard, drums, sitar-but that doesn`t mean you have to play the licks they provided for the Beatles. In fact, using them in other contexts provides an intriguing combination of freshness and deja vu; these are highly playable, "organic" sounds that have intrinsic merit and coolness, regardless of their lineage. The quality is undeniable, I can`t imagine what East West must have gone through to track down these sounds (and get engineer Ken Scott on board), tweak them to perfection, and adapt them to a virtual instrument format. Bottom line: There are many great sound libraries out there, but this is a tour de force. (EQ Magazine, May 2008)
